Program music was a "new" genre in the 19th Century where the composer writes a one movement piece that is intended to use orchestral sounds to represent a picture or a story.  Once movies and television became important forms of communication in the 20th Century, composers are less likely to write "concert pieces" such as The Moldau

Walt Disney made some classical pieces from the 19th Century such as "The Sorceror's Apprentice" by french composer Dukas very famous by animating the story starring Mickey Mouse.

Another famous piece was Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens. This has also  been used for children's videos. The class will compose a piece of program music to go with some footage of dolphins to make our own example for Carnival of The Animals
